Jaroslaw Kukowski’s Modliszki

May 8th, 2008
Kukowski 1

Polish artist Jaroslaw Kukowski might be labeled a surrealist but you really can’t be a surrealist anymore because that was a particular art movement that is generally considered to be over.

Here’s what Wikipedia says:

“There is no clear consensus about the end, or if there was an end, to the Surrealist movement. Some art historians suggest that WWII effectively disbanded the movement. However, art historian Sarane Alexandrian (1970) states, “the death of AndrĂ© Breton in 1966 marked the end of Surrealism as an organized movement.” There have also been attempts to tie the obituary of the movement to the 1989 death of Salvador DalĂ.

Anyway, Kukowski’s art looks like surrealism but it also looks like fantasy or science fiction art. Maybe neo-surreal so it can be postmodern. There’s no real reason to bother with labels unless you’re composing a dictionary of artists or categorizing a blog post :)

Here’s how Kukowski’s paintings are described in his artist statement (note surrealistic is used as an adjective):

“The artist’s work is directed towards the in-depth study of human nature. His work is the world of surrealistic creatures, which disturb the spirit of sensitive observer. In his work we can notice the grotesque and mockery of imperfections of life, and sense the signals of danger and threat. His view on life sometimes seems to be very drastic and exaggerated.”
